Minus Malaria Initiative (MMI)
Minus Malaria is an initiative funded by the Pericles Grant that aims to spread anti-malaria campaigns all over the country. We hope that through these campaigns, college students educate their communities and encourage activism to help an epidemic that can be easily prevented. With each campaign, money will be raised to buy insecticide treated bed-nets that will be distributed throughout Uganda and Sierra Leone along with an educational presentation on what precautions to take. If you are interested in joining this initiative, please contact Network Coordinaters Cariad Chester () or John McMinn ().
Our vision is to establish a network of college student groups whose anti-malaria initiatives—including education, fundraising, and generating malaria awareness—make malaria and other global health issues prominent in the media and in people’s minds. Because institutions of higher education shape the intellectual culture of a nation, our initiative has the potential to foster greater national action in the struggle against malaria.
Because of the diversity of college campuses in terms of backgrounds and interests, we can achieve multifaceted engagement surrounding the issue of malaria. The malaria epidemic is relevant not only to those interested in a career in medicine, but also to future economists, sociologists, activists, and policy makers. Through intense networking at other colleges, we foresee the creation of a unified effort of individuals interested in diverse disciplines but united in their passion to fight malaria.
As of August 2009, MMI is happy to unveil a revolutionary program: Give a Net, Get a Vote. Read further for information about this new idea.
What makes MMI unique? The ideals motivating the leaders of MMI include commitment to transparency, social and moral responsibility towards helping others, interdisciplinary collaboration, self-initiative, and sustainability. MMI is one of a kind, because it is comprised of college students from all around the country pushing for the complete control of malaria. Everything from campaign management and network building to distributing bednets is done by college students.
